چکیده

11 12 Species distribution is usually explained by abiotic factors, particularly, climatic variables which 13 are often considered as the most important drivers of species distribution. Nevertheless, when 14 investigating the underlying causality in species distribution, the importance of those factors 15 together with the role of anthropogenic factors (land-use variables) must be considered. 16 Particularly in the Mediterranean basin where natural ecosystems underwent important 17 transformations due to anthropogenic pressure in the territory. In this work we studied the effects 18 of abiotic and anthropogenic factors on Quercus faginea distribution identifying the key factors 19 that shape its distribution in the Spanish Central Pyrenees. Data on presence-absence of Q. 20 faginea species, abiotic variables and anthropogenic variables were derived by GIS from digital 21 sources and aerial photographs. We used Bayesian model averaging to identify the key factors 22 that affect the spatial distribution of Q. faginea. Than Then we applied hierarchical partitioning 23 to estimate the relative importance of each key factor. In the Spanish Central Pyrenees, on a 24 broad scale, abiotic variables, i.e. climate and lithology, were identified as underlying factors that 25 shape the spatial distribution of Q. faginea. The presence of recently introduced plantations and 26 previous livestock pressure had a negative effect on Q. faginea distribution; which represent the 27 anthropogenic disturbance effect on this species. This study indicated that in this mountain area 28 and at our regional scale, although abiotic factors have a great importance in explaining the 29 underlying causality in Q. faginea distribution, anthropogenic factors can not be neglected. 30

Effects of light and sound stimuli on spatial distribution and swimming activity of Daphnia under laboratory conditions

Aquatic ecosystems are heterogeneous in terms of light and sound distribution. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of environmental abiotic factors, light and sound stimuli, on Daphnia (Daphnia magna) swimming behaviour.  Here, we examined behavioural changes of Daphnia (N=24) in response to light and sound treatments simultaneously. The treatments concerned a 2×2 design with br...

Edge effects confirmed at the clear-cut area of Korean red pine forest in Uljin, eastern Korea

Background: Forest edges create distinctive ecological space as adjacent constituents, which distinguish between different ecosystems or land use types. These edges are made by anthropogenic or natural disturbance and affects both abiotic and biotic factors gradually. This study was carried out to assess edge effects on disturbed landscape at the pine-dominated clear-cut area in a genetic resou...

Effects of forest management on epiphytic lichen diversity in Mediterranean forests

Question: What are the responses of epiphytic lichens to the intensity of management along a large environmental gradient in Mediterranean Quercus forests? Location: Central Spain. Methods: This study was carried out on 4590 trees located in 306 forest stands dominated by Quercus faginea or Quercus ilex ssp. ballota. The effect of forest management and other predictor variables on several speci...

Leaf morphological and physiological adaptations of a deciduous oak (Quercus faginea Lam.) to the Mediterranean climate: a comparison with a closely related temperate species (Quercus robur L.).

'White oaks'--one of the main groups of the genus Quercus L.--are represented in western Eurasia by the 'roburoid oaks', a deciduous and closely related genetic group that should have an Arcto-Tertiary origin under temperate-nemoral climates. Nowadays, roburoid oak species such as Quercus robur L. are still present in these temperate climates in Europe, but others are also present in southern E...

Seasonal carbon storage and growth in Mediterranean tree seedlings under different water conditions.

In all Mediterranean-type ecosystems, evergreen and deciduous trees differing in wood anatomy, growth pattern and leaf habit coexist, suggesting distinct adaptative responses to environmental constraints. This study examined the effects of summer water stress on carbon (C) storage and growth in seedlings of three coexisting Mediterranean trees that differed in phenology and wood anatomy charact...
